Kimber Andrews, Choreography & Video, Benjamin Smith, Music. 2008
What Remains is a multimedia performance work that explores past and present as well as the importance of place.
The music for this work is all generated during the performance from an acoustic violin with an interactive computer system. Through the use of pedals I, the violinist, am able to capture sections of the improvisation and store them for later playback. Just as the dancer merges with the video and blends the now with the past, I am able to blend the now into the future. Slowly unfolding and growing, the music gains momentum as earlier samples are recalled, increasing the density of the orchestration, simultaneously propelling and restraining the progression of time.
